imprint

A publisher’s line of books that deals with a specific subject. For example, Crown is now an imprint of Random House that publishes current fiction.

impression cylinder

The cylinder, covered with inked rubber, of an offset printing press. A sheet of paper picks up an impression from it. Also called a blanket cylinder.

imposition

Refers to the arrangement of printed pages of a signature being in the correct sequence and right-side up after printing, folding, and cutting.

imagesetter

A laser-based printer, of very high resolution, that makes prints onto photo paper. A platesetter, a similar machine, makes images onto printing plates of plastic or metal.
